Why do I bother?

Everytime I logon to one of these social networking sites, I end up either frustrated with all the countless adds for crap or I’m left baffled as to why, when I have a career, a family, real-world friends a house to take care of and plenty of stuff to do, I waste time on all these sites.  It’s not as if I don’t already know a bunch of people, it’s not as if I don’t have other things I could be doing!  Each time I log off I think to myself, "I coulda been doing something else with that time." And yet…

I still find myself at odd hours of the day or night checking my accounts on one of the various social networking sites like Friendster, MySpace, Black Planet, Tribe, Yahoo 360, IMEEM, etc., etc., etc.  I barely have time to stay on top of my e-mail, let alone spend time on these social networking sites.  But I keep coming back.  Why?!  It’s just so irresistable when I can "meet" and communicate with people around the country, around the globe, or just around the block; people with whom I share common interests, whether its a social cause, a tv show, a band, or whatever!  So, despite the irritating advertisements, the repeated spam, the hackers, the sites that get buggy and slow or log me out unexpectedly - right when I’m in the midst of expounding on something only I would ever think was significant, despite it all, I still keep loging on.

Why do you logon?
